Black Flower returns with their powerful new single Monkey System. A thought-provoking reflection on human nature and our struggle to let go of what once captivated us—even when it turns into a trap.
The title is inspired by the parable of the monkey: a trap is set in a hole in a tree, holding a tempting prize. The monkey grabs it, but as danger nears, it refuses to let go, its fist stuck. The monkey is caught. Lured by a tempting prize yet ensnared by its own stubbornness, the song mirrors a deeper truth: our tendency to cling to desires that ultimately hold us back. Monkey System is a reflection on this state of mind, and by extension, a poignant metaphor for the human condition.
The single features Meskerem Mees, the Montreux Jazz Talent award-winning, million-streaming artist who previously collaborated with Black Flower on their single Morning in the Jungle. She made a remarkable debut with her album Julius in 2021, blending folk simplicity with a lyrical depth that resonates beyond her years. Mees is an artist in constant evolution, balancing new opportunities and creative growth.
This new track showcases Black Flower's signature blend of ethio-jazz, oriental influences, dub, and afrobeat. The jazz combo, hailed by tastemakers such as Gilles Peterson, The Gaslamp Killer, and Lefto Early Bird, has performed live sessions on BBC Radio 3 and Worldwide FM. Their previous albums earned widespread acclaim, with glowing reviews from prestigious publications such as MOJO, Stereogum, Q Magazine, and Uncut Magazine. The band has toured extensively across Europe, building a strong fanbase.
Monkey System is out today on all streaming platforms.
