Brussels-based artist Adja Fassa releases the second single of her very diverse, upcoming debut album. The album promises to be quite a ride: a contemporary body of work about the way our capitalistic society impacts our most intimate moments.
Contrary to the first single being a gentle plea for a moment to breathe, this one will leave you out of breath. ‘Sucking on my emphatitties’. A straightforward slap in the face that will invigorate or aggravate, depending on what you like.
“An attempt at rock, but actually just my way of expressing my feeling towards the violent societal systems we have to maneuver through every day. Even though it is rarely a solution, sometimes you just want to fight fire with fire”, Adja says.
The song tells a story of an anti-hero, on the turning point of no longer wanting to be “the better man”, bluntly admitting that they have no more room for empathy, no spare shoulder to cry on. Frankly, they have had enough of society taking their energy, time and efforts and they’ll be looking for their own cow to milk. ‘Emphattities’ has become a wordplay between empathy, emphatic and…. well, you get it.
Serious and concrete topics, wrapped up in a symbolic and light package, as the music is embodied by Adja’s self-designed tarot cards. For the first single, ‘The Wheel Of Fortune’ stood front and center. This time around, the Wheel of Fortune takes on a more sinister version of itself, becoming a coin as well as the only thing to grab onto into a dark abyss.
‘Sucking on my Emphatitties’ was co-produced with British producer and musician Adam Scrimshire. In 2022 Scrimshire was named in the Guardian as one of three crucial soul-music producers in the UK today (alongside Inflo and Swindle).
This is the latest new work from Adja since her debut EP two years ago, it’s the start of a new chapter in Adja’s career with upcoming debut album 'Golden Retrieve Her' via Sdban Ultra and a release show in the legendary Brussels venue Ancienne Belgique on the 9th of May.
