With “WHAT A NIGHT”, Belgian pianist and composer Orson Claeys presents a striking encounter between jazz improvisation and contemporary hip-hop, joined by Los Angeles-based rapper IAMOMNI. The track unfolds as a nocturnal ride through the streets of L.A., capturing the city’s after-dark energy through a cinematic blend of spontaneous expression, rhythmic drive, and vivid storytelling.
The song started from a spontaneous studio moment with indie soul singer Sevens, who shared a set of unfinished chords, originally written years earlier but never completed. Inspired by their emotional depth and open-ended character, Claeys developed them into a fully realized composition, allowing the music to evolve naturally.
The collaboration with IAMOMNI came together through Mix Monster Menno of STUFF., who introduced Claeys to the L.A.-based rapper after hearing the demo. IAMOMNI’s distinctive flow and effortless delivery brought the track to life, adding a new layer of movement and personality to the song.
Although the track eventually found its voice through the addition of IAMOMNI, its foundation remained rooted in jazz: “My goal wasn't to create a traditional hip-hop beat or a typical rap instrumental. I wanted the track to feel like a genuine jazz composition first and foremost, built around a classic jazz trio with an upright bass instead of a heavy electronic bass sound. The music had to stand on its own, even without vocals.”
The new single reflects Claeys’ ongoing exploration of the space where jazz tradition meets contemporary influences. It’s a late-night soundtrack full of atmosphere, motion, and unexpected turns. It marks a meeting point between two musical worlds, blending Claeys’ jazz-rooted approach with IAMOMNI’s West Coast energy into a fresh and authentic sound.
